Why is Goal Setting Important?
There is a lot of information to be found on the subject of goal setting. We are constantly being told that we must set goals and write them down if we are to achieve success in any area of our lives. But what the information often leaves out is why we must do this, and what makes it vital to our success. So- why is goal setting important?
Well, it may just surprise you to learn that everything we do in life is aimed towards a certain goal- from going to work (the goal is to earn a certain amount of income, or to develop our careers to a certain level), to watching television (the goal here is to receive a level of entertainment, relaxation or learning). Even sleeping has a goal- to attain rest and wake up feeling refreshed. So, if we are always working to a goal anyway, why not consciously set goals and deliberately move our lives forwards in the direction we want to go?
Benefits Of Goal Setting
Goal setting provides us with direction and clarity in our lives. We will know exactly what we want to achieve in our lives, and have a structured plan in place for achieving it. Without proper written goals, there is a tendency to just drift in life and experience little satisfaction.
It is a fact that 95% of Americans do not have written goals. It is also a fact that one factor that links most wealthy and successful individuals is that they regularly write down both long term and short term goals.
Having proper written goals focuses our energies on what we want out of life; the subconscious mind is a powerful thing- it will start to work on ways of achieving your goals without you even being aware of it. You may find that you keep having ideas to move you towards attaining your goal, seemingly out of the blue. They’re not- that’s your subconscious mind at work!
Achieving our goals gives us the sense of taking charge of our own destiny- we in turn actually create our destiny. When we start to set and achieve small goals, thus taking small steps towards changing our lives which then leads to achieving bigger and bigger goals, we feel a tremendous sense of satisfaction and achievement.
Another reason why goal setting is important is that it inspires us to take action now- it is a fact that we have a natural tendency towards procrastination, particularly if we don’t have a focus. Focussing on our goals and visualising how good it will make us feel when we have achieved them inspires us to make them a reality. Setting goals also gives us the motivation to achieve them as they suddenly become tangible, rather than just vague dreams.
I would go so far as to say that setting and writing goals is essential if you want to achieve success in any area of your life. It really can be the difference between success and failure.
