Goal Setting Vs Accomplishing Goals

I just finished running a software program that retrieves sentences on the internet including the word or phrase you select. I “selected goal setting is” as can be expected the query came back with thousands of sentences. I guess goal setting is a lot of things to a lot of people. The real question is, what is goal setting to you.

And if you can answer this question, is goal setting even important. Some say 97% of the people who set goals never achieve them. If true this is a pretty scary thought. Or looking from the other side, it just means goal setting is a worthless practice.

I tend to think neither is true. I believe the problem is not with goal setting but accomplishing goals. Anyone can learn to write an effective goal in 10 minutes. While choosing an effective goal may take considerably longer that is a topic for another day.

So if you will humor me and agree effective goal setting is easy, why then is it to difficult to accomplish goals. We so many people teaching how to set goals, I think it is safe to say the problem is not with the goal itself.

Thus it must have to do with the process of achieving the goal. Yet indeed most quality teachers of goal setting include the process as part of the goal. That is having enough desires and reasons to get you through the challenges that will certainly arise.

Something must be missing. Is there something the 3% who are accomplishing their goals are doing the other 97% are not doing? Or do the 3% just have some mental attribute the rest of us don’t have.

I must side with the latter statement. I believe the 3% have the ability to hold themselves accountable, where as the rest of us no matter how hard we try just will not hold ourselves accountable. I understand this is a harsh statement, but none the less true.

One must only look inside and ask themselves how many times have you started out to accomplish something promising yourself you would do what ever it takes, only to end up disappointed one more time. Items that come to mind are saving and exercising.

Yet I believe the answer to be simplicity at its finest. If you are unable to to hold yourself accountable then find someone else who will. And for most high achievers and athletes that is a coach. Now coaches are great, yet they are expensive and often can only be accessed a few times a month.

Even better than a coach is to go out and find an accountability partner. Someone who will hold you to what you say you will do. Please make sure this person is positive and truly wants you to succeed. Then report to this person on a daily basis. I think you will be amazed at how you will hold yourself accountable to this person when you would not do it yourself.

Why not give it a try? You have nothing to lose and may have a whole new lifestyle to gain.
